Introduction for Supartz

Supartz is a highly purified sodium hyaluronate trademarked and manufactured by Smith & Nephew. Hyaluronan was the first osteoarthritis treatment first introduced in Japan in 1987 under the brand name Artzal and received FDA approval as Supartz in 2001.Since its introduction it has sold more than 150 million injections worldwide.

Supartz use

Supartz is a hyaluronan used to supplement the viscous properties of synovial fluid. It is injected directly into joints such as knees, hips, shoulders, and elbows to give relief of pain and restore mobility caused by osteoarthritis. It is administered once a week for a total of 3 injections with results lasting 9-12 months.

Supartz side effects

Supartz may have side effects such as pain or swelling injected site, joint pain, headache, numbness or tingly feeing, skin irritation, knee pain or tenderness. Because it is a natural product derived from rooster combs if allergy to bird or bird by product is suspected Supartz should be avoided. It is not known if it may affect an unborn child or passed through breast milk. It should be avoided if an infection on or around the injection site is present. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 48 following treatment.
