Synvisc uses

Synvisc is not considered a drug but a treatment in which hyaluronates are injected directly into the knee joint to replace normal cushioning and lubricating of joints. Treatment consists of three injections one week apart. Synvisc gives relief of pain and may delay surgery after joint damage caused by osteoarthritis of the knee, hip and shoulders, with effects lasting up to 6 months. Other uses are being investigated.

Synvisc side effects

Allergic reactions are possible if allergy to bird or bird by-products exist. Though Synvisc is generally well-tolerated, the most common side effect is irritation at injection site. More serious side effects to watch for are swelling tingling or burning of the hands, feet or face, fever, calf cramping, fast heartbeat, fever, hemorrhoids, muscle pain, headache, nausea and upset stomach. It is not know if it may affect an unborn child or be passed through breast milk.
